What is hyperbolic tapering?

How do I help?

During the sessions, we establish a tapering plan (either hyperbolic or using the Ashton method). The dose reduction process is tailored to the specific medication(s), dosage, and duration of use.

We monitor withdrawal symptoms and focus on the most troublesome ones, introducing strategies to alleviate them. In some cases, when symptoms are severe, I recommend specific preparations and supplements.

Family members or a partner are welcome to join the sessions to collaboratively plan a support system during the recovery process.

At a later stage, we work on regulating the microbiome, which is often disrupted due to medication use.

The dose reduction process is carried out in collaboration with the prescribing physician.

Hyperbolic Tapering is a method of gradually discontinuing psychotropic medications, such as antidepressants, neuroleptics, or benzodiazepines, in a nonlinear (hyperbolic) manner—meaning with progressively smaller dose reductions as the process advances.

The reduction is proportional to the current dose. This means that initial changes are larger, while at lower doses, the tapering slows down. The goal is to minimize withdrawal symptoms and allow the body to adapt to lower medication levels.

Receptors adapt to the drug in a nonlinear way, and the lower the dose, the greater the sensitivity to reduction. Discontinuing too quickly can lead to intensified withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, insomnia, depression, or physical symptoms (dizziness, nausea). Slow and gradual dose reduction helps the central nervous system adapt to the changes.
